What Is Assisted Hatching ?
Assisted hatching is a laboratory micromanipulation technique carried out before the embryos are replaced in the uterus that helps the embryo to hatch from the zona.
In the initial stages of development, the embryo is placed in a layer of proteins, zona pellicuda made for protecting the embryo until it reaches the blastocyst stage of development. To successfully implant into the uterus, it is required that the embryo hatches out of it and attaches itself to the walls of the uterus.
Sometimes, the embryo has difficulty in hatching out of the layer, if the layer is too thick or if the embryo does not have enough pressure from the cells to break through. Assisted hatching helps in this release.
